EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

According to the Bill of Rights of South Africa’s constitution, the government has an obligation to make basic education, including adult basic education and further education,  available and accessible.

South Africa rates amongst one of the highest public investment of education in the world, i.e. about 5.3% of gross domestic product (GDP), and 20% of total government expenditure.

It is our belief that with the matric results of 2011 now released, the following challenges await us in 2012:

• Set the education bar higher
• Set realistic education targets
• Clamp down on mis-spending of educational funds
• Have a strategic plan, and apply it
• Have a Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, and follow it through to the very end
• Conduct surprise visits to schools, and education centres alike
• Motivate students to work hard
• Give students credit where due
• Improve the quality and level  of educators/facilitators
• Implement student coaching programmes
